The Study: Does Drinking Juice Reduce the Health Benefits of Eating Fruit?

This study aimed to determine the effect of consuming a vegetable beverage (juice) instead of eating a fruit snack on the antioxidant capacity of the blood. The researchers recruited 10 healthy young adults and randomly assigned them to one of two groups. Each person in the first group was asked to drink two 500 mL servings of carrot juice every day for two weeks, while the second group was asked to eat two 500 g carrots every day for two weeks. 

Before the study began, each participant’s blood was collect and the researchers determine their blood antioxidant capacity. At the end of the two-week study, blood was collec again and the researchers compare the results between the two groups. 

What the researchers found was that the antioxidant capacity of the blood decreased by 76% in the group that drank carrot juice compared to the group that ate carrots. These results suggest that drinking carrot juice instead of eating carrots significantly reduced the antioxidant capacity of the blood compared to eating the same amount of carrots as a snack and drinking carrot juice as a beverage.
